Clematis 'Rubens'

Clematis 'Rubens'

  • Abundant four-petalled pink flowers in spring
  • Vigorous deciduous climber
  • Ideal for covering a fence or training against a wall
  • Grows well in sun or part shade

Smothered in masses of four-petalled pink flowers in spring, vigorous deciduous climber Clematis montana ‘Rubens’ is great for covering long stretches of fencing or training against a large wall. Growing well in sun or part shade, it adds gorgeous late spring colour to the garden, and with its prominent stamens it’s also a valuable early food source for pollinators. Give it plenty of space to spread out and provide a support frame or wires for the stems to twine around.

How you will receive your plants:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a pot, ready to plant out.

Can’t plant straight away?

Place the pot in a sheltered spot outdoors and water regularly to keep the soil moist.

Planting tips and hints:

Planting in the ground: Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Plant clematis deep, with the crown of the plant at least5-8cm (3in) below ground level to encourage bushy plants. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly. Clematis prefer their roots to be cool, so plant with the roots in shade or shield them by placing tiles or stones around the base of the plant.

Planting in containers: Plant in a container at least 45cm in diameter, with good drainage holes, filled with multi-purpose compost.

Aftercare

Group 1 clematis: Prune after flowering if necessary to keep the plant to size. Apply a slow release fertiliser and mulch in spring.
