This vigorous climber adds an exotic touch to fences and walls with its stunning bowl-shaped white flowers with purple centres and white filaments. Although it’s mainly grown for the spectacular flowers, the egg-shaped fruits that follow may ripen in long hot summers, containing sweet orange pulp that can be scooped out with a spoon and is delicious on cereal or juiced in smoothies.
A fast-growing climber, it can spread to 6-8m but is not hardy and will need winter protection. In cold winters it may lose all its leaves. Probably only the south-west of the UK has warm enough conditions to get a good crop of edible fruits, but the eye-catching flowers are worth a place in any garden!
