Organic butterhead lettuce ‘Sylvesta’ produces big heads with large tender green outer leaves and crisp inner hearts. Reliable and disease-resistant to downy mildew and lettuce aphid, it’s ideal for succession sowing to give a long harvest period through summer.

Sow indoors

Sow thinly 1cm deep in clean trays or modules of firm, pre-watered compost. Place in warmth, 10-15°C and keep moist at all times.

Plant out

After the risk of frost has passed, plant into the required harvest position 25cm apart with 30cm between each row when plants have 3-4 true leaves.

Sow outdoors

Sow thinly 1cm deep in direct harvest location. Keep soil moist at all times. Thin to 25cm apart.

Tips

Keep well watered. Small sowings made every 3 weeks will ensure a continuous supply. Use netting to help prevent damage from birds and insects.
