Lythrum Salicaria Seeds 'Purple Loosestrife'

Lythrum Salicaria Seeds 'Purple Loosestrife'

  • Tall spires of purple-red flowers in summer
  • Ideal for damp soils
  • Very attractive to pollinators
  • Native wildflower

A native British wildflower that grows naturally along the banks of streams, purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is perfect for ponds, bog gardens and waterside planting, with tall spires of bright purple-red flowers in summer. Butterflies, bees and hoverflies all love the colourful flowers.

Sow indoors

Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface, and just cover them with a little more compost. Place in the warmth, 15-20°C, and keep moist. Allow 2-3 weeks for germination.

Grow on

When large enough to handle, transplant individually into 8cm pots.

Plant out

Slowly acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out when all danger of frost has passed, in a damp or wet soil in sun or part-shade, about 45cm apart.

Sow outdoors

Sow directly into the planting position in spring or summer, in well-prepared soil, just covering lightly. Thin if required to around 45cm apart.
