Silene armeria ‘Rubra’ is a splash of vibrant colour in summer, with clusters of vivid, deep pink flowers contrasting with grey-green foliage. It looks fantastic planted in large groups for big impact, and will self-seed. This striking hardy annual is suitable for sun or partial shade.

Sow outdoors

Sow in trays of pre-watered seed compost and cover lightly. Keep in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse, do not allow to dry out and allow several weeks for germination.

Grow on

When large enough to handle, transplant into 8cm (3in) pots. Slowly acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out after frosts.

Plant out

Choose a sunny spot in any well-drained soil. Plant approximately 30cm (12in) apart.

Tips

Seeds may be slow to germinate, so please be patient. A period of exposure to colder temperatures will help this process.
